Annabel Karmel ‘Quick and Easy Weaning’ ~ A Book Review

I think Thomas is starting to get fussier and fussier as an eater. I think all kids go through this phase right (please say yes, please say yes!) . I found the purées easy, I found the simple finger foods simple. But now he is slightly older and eating actual meals…..I am struggling for easy but healthy recipes!!!

I was therefore REALLY happy when I was asked to review the Quick and Easy Weaning book by Annabel Karmel MBE. Now…..quick AND easy…I liked the sound of that!!! The book concentrates on your babies first year of eating by creating a step by step weaning routine for you to follow. There are over 100 recipes. It contains meal planners for first tastes, 6 months, 6-9 months and 9-12 month olds as well as advice for establishing good eating habits hoo-rah!

I wish I had this book when I first started weaning Thomas at 6 months! And I fully recommend it to anyone who is about to start weaning! There are so many good ideas and the meal planners really help you with when and how much to  be feeding little ones!

I found the best part was the meal planners because I just didn’t know how much to be feeding Thomas and I was REALLY stuck for lunch ideas. I laughed when in the book it said “it’s easy to get into a sandwich rut, reaching for the same fail-safe fillings day in and day out.” hahahaha- that’s us to a tee!!! Avocado sandwiches and hummus sandwiches were coming out of my ears!

I am using the 9-12 month old section as I got the book when Thomas was 11 months and I love the recipes- they are easy and most importantly all healthy! I have also used some of the purée recipes from earlier on in the book because when Thomas is teething he likes to eat soft foods. Also, purées are always nice to add to porridge!!

We have made quite a few things from the book already. My personal favourite were the noodles (although we replaced the beef with salmon as that’s what we had in the fridge!):

Thomas loved playing with the noodles!

Thomas’ favourite was the cod and sweetcorn fish pie! (again we swapped the white potatoes for sweet potatoes because well…that’s what we had in the cupboard!…and I added peas for some extra veg!)

sweet potato fish pieFor breakfasts we are now loving porridge with fruit compote and topped with fresh raspberries and blueberries. I have swapped the cow’s milk with coconut milk because of Thomas’ milk allergy.

AND finally….lunches….there are so many lunch ideas!! In fact, you could use any recipe in the book for a lunch! but there is a ‘finger foods’ section at the end of the book which is super helpful! From cream cheese and jam sandwiches, egg mayo and tomato pinwheels to tortilla pizza wedges and berry and yoghurt ice lollies….Thomas is a very happy little boy!

Just look at these beauties which are next to make on my list! –
