A week late! Can you tell Thomas is going through the 4 month sleep regression phase! I don’t really post anything very long or detailed! The waking up every 2 hours a night is killing me!!
BUT as much as I am sleep deprived I am also the happiest and proudest mumma that my little pumpkin is learning so much this month and really developing into a very charismatic little man! He has the largest smile and biggest personality and I just love him to bits.
Things he is doing realllyyyy well is looking at his hands and contemplating. He thinks about everything he does before he does it. Even kicking his turtle….there is a pensive pause and then ‘BOOM BOOM BOOM’ the hardest kicks on his little jingly turtle toy….he likes the noise it makes….I personally feel sorry for the turtle!
We also got him a Baby Einstein gym last week. The first day he got it he was again very pensive and did NOT like the blue octopus AT ALL. He would frown and then start crying. If he did play he would keep looking at the octopus out of the corner of his eye. So I removed it and now he LOVES it!! It’s really helped him to reach out and grab things as before he wouldn’t really put his arm out to get hold of things so I wanted something to promote his confidence in this and it worked!!
I am really aware that Thomas LOVES other babies. He smiles and watches them from a far. At the doctors, at our fortnightly weigh-ins. I do feel really sorry for him that he has no friends to play with. So I am going to take him to our first playgroup this morning at our local Sure-start centre. He will get to meet other babies his age and we sing and play games for an hour and a half. I am a bit weary that 9.30am-11am is usually his nap time so I really hope he will stay awake for it!! In addition I am going to start taking him to the David Lloyd crèche for an hour every Wednesday. They have lots of babies there his age and I think it will do him good being able to see other people and start interacting rather than just looking at my ugly mug all day!! (Wednesdays is also BodyPump class day so I can also start working out….finally!!). I keep telling myself it’s only an hour Susan…..but I think I may cry the first time I leave him!!
Other things that Thomas is doing this month is babbling and using more sounds. A few times he’s said mama but he obviously has no idea he’s saying it….one day! He has always hated lying down because of his reflux, but he’s really started to get very strong and can sit up without hardly any help. I do try to support him as I know his back is not strong enough yet, but he just keeps propelling himself up! mostly to either sit up or even standing up. He has yet to roll over though! The other thing he likes the most is being carried around, he won’t let me or my husband sit down with him mist of the time, he really loves to look around at everything! He knows the way around our house and when I carry him into different rooms he turns his body around to get the best view (he also knows where all the mirrors are and makes sure he can see himself as we walk by….LOVE HIM!)
He hasn’t sucked his thumb yet, instead he has opted for his entire fist. He hasn’t shown any interest in food yet either…..still very happy with breastmilk.
One thing we did do this month was go SWIMMING! I was bit worried about him crying and/or getting too cold but he didn’t and was really relaxed in the pool! at one point where he was floating on his back I thought he was going to fall asleep!
I did book baby swimming classes but cancelled them because I was worried about Thomas’ reaction to being in the water and also the classes went from November-February and I knew it would be getting really cold during this time and we probably wouldn’t make all the classes, especially as my husband’s family is visiting from Thailand in December so we would be really busy. So I will take him myself until the spring and then re-evaluate the swim classes
Thomas’ favourite things this month are STILL ‘Old McDonald has a Farm’ he laughs every time! Incy wincy spider, looking at his mobile and kicking his turtle toy, and playing with is bug toy. He also loves the baby bouncer we have hanging from the door (gets a laugh every time we put him in it) and being carried around the house so he can see everything. His baby gym is also now a hit, after being apprehensive about it at first!
Sleep is not so good, he is up every 2 hours on the dot. But I can’t complain as last night he fell asleep at 4.30pm and we got up at 6.45am- so even though sleep is broken he is in bed for quite a while! (note: he usually goes to be around 6.30pm since the clocks went forward). He is also taking longer naps in the day time He sleeps for 20 mins then wakes a little but with a gentle rub on his back he usually falls asleep for an hour more! Nap times are around 9am, 1pm and 3.30pm. Although this is subject to change at any time!! I really hope this sleep regression will be over soon- I need more than 2 hours of solid sleep at a time!
